Little Mosque on the Prairie Episode 2 - Video and Review

This one was just flat out lame. There is not much else to say other than that. They are doing a great job of making Muslims look like a bunch of horn dogs and idiots. As for all the people who think this is great, and will bridge the gap, blah blah blah. Well, it may bridge the gap for people who resemble these characters in real life, and if that is the case … you better check yourself before you wreck yourself. You got big problems to worry about. “Hi, look at me I’m a Muslim imam and I’m soooo normal, I can’t keep myself from checking out girls when they bend over.” Anyone that thinks this is good for dawah needs to come back to planet earth.

This really was just painful to watch, especially with all the wonderful sexual “humor” thrown in (that wasn’t even funny I might add).

Only a matter of time before something in the deen gets mocked …

Anyway, here are the videos.. enjoy (or gag).

I agree, it was pretty lame - that imam checking out that girl was unnecessary.

  2. The Avatar Says:

I must say the one thing I really did not like was the blonde woman’s comments to Yasir in the mosque at the end of the episode. Her comments regarding her sexual relations with her husband should not have been made there. It could have easily been shifted to the next scene. Furthermore, her comments I think actually that what she says justifies every person in the episode who argued in favour of the barrier. She undercut herself (and others who share her views against barriers) entirely and made herself look like a secular feminist which no ethics and sense of place in society. She really was a distraction. Fortunately, I don’t really think that this would ever really happen in a mosque. Terrible aspect of the writing. On the other side, I did like that Babur (sp?) had a relaxed and realistic appraoch based on his comment that there is always “next month”. It shows he really is human and not a Follow the Qu’ran with the right answer and actions all the time.

  3. Amad Says:

atleast the flirty imam quoted from bukhari!

just take the masjid out… make it a regular un-moslem related comedy, and it’ll be just fine!

  4. gudal Says:

this is only the second show. i hope the ratings sink and the show is pulled.

  5. nuqtah/sleeplesslonging... Says:

…and it only gets worse. I’ve yet to see anything remotely islamic or even ‘muslim’ about the show….

…and did I forget to mention ‘not funny’ ?

good review here on dr. m’s blog (read post)

  7. raincoaster Says:

The first episode was funny, though. And that imam can flirt with me anytime; the actual worst problem on the show is the overacting by the daughter. The director should take all her lines away until she brings it down a few notches.

  8. nrwn Says:

This episode was just NOT funny, except the bit with Babar and his daughter. I’m actually starting to like the guy… he’s ironically enough the most sensible person on this show… him, and that african lady who works at the coffee shop (don’t remember her name).

I think my biggest problem with this episode were the sexual jokes and references. Not to mention all those kissing scenes between Yasser and his wife. Damn, was that really neccesary? I mean, in Islam, those things are supposed to be done privately, behind closed doors. The fact that they continuously did it infuriated me more and more as the episode progressed.
And don’t even get me started on the pinching bit at the mosque… ugh, that was disgusting. >_

  9. nrwn Says:

I’m going to drop this sitcom, until someone can convince me to do otherwise.

  10. AnonyMouse Says:

As-salaamu ‘alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatu,

I watched the second episode and was extremely dismayed and disappointed. From the first episode, I thought, “Well, right now it sucks, but it’s got the potential to be better.”
Now? I’m disgusted, really. A lot of the humour was totally inappropriate, and I just did not agree with a lot of what was shown.
And when Fatima says the Qur’an says women aren’t allowed to talk on the radio, and makes up some chapter and verse? I’m pretty sure that’s haraam, no?

The sexual humour is what made me angriest, though. I mean, there were KIDS watching that show! I know, ‘cuz at the madrasah I volunteer at one of the girls was telling me about it. I’m sure that Muslim parents wouldn’t want their kids watching this sort of thing!
Subhan’Allah, I remember the creator of the show Zarqa Nawaz saying that she wanted her kids to be able to watch a TV show about Muslims - but would she want them watching it with the sexual humour, too?! So much for it being ‘clean, Muslim comedy’!

Like a couple others above have said, Baber is the best character on the show, with Fatima (the coffee lady) being the second best.
But the rest of it is just plain rubbish.

    2 cents:

    Assalamualaikum:

After watching these 2 episodes very carefully, and reflecting on them, I feel that although there are some horrible parts in these shows like the erotic humor that was placed in, I feel that it is a very strong move in the right direction for Muslims in that it gives non MUSLIMs some insight to the problems that we ace and humnaizes us to an already brainwashed audience that thinks we are all horrible people. Maybe we could advice the producer instead of crticizing on blogs. Just an Idea.

    Once again 2 cents.

  12. imhere Says:

ya, i dont agree with this adeel’s opinions

    show still sucks

  13. ehteram Says:

I think this analysis of the show is the best I’ve read.

  14. Abdu Says:

    salaam,
They should just pull anything related to Islam out of the show. The characters should not pretend to be Muslim, then I wold feel a lot better. But if they did that then this show wouldn’t make it on regular television, the fact that it has the word mosque in the title is what is keeping the show above water. It is amazing how some people will sell their deen for some money and fame. Why not make the show realistically portray the actual religion of Islam?

  15. Noor Says:

    Assalamu alaikum,

Jazakallahu khairan for your informative posts.

I am really disturbed by this new sitcom and I think that although it may give SOME insight to non-Muslims about what Muslims are and what Islam is, I think this is the wrong way to go about it and if the creator is not careful, she may be portraying Islam in a bad light or even incorrectly, and putting herself in a bad position. If she is smart, she’ll put this to a stop. It would’ve been better if she had done research in Islam to see if this was acceptable, rather than doing research about what would get attention amongst the Western audience. Sorry for my ranting, but I just thought it should be known. Jazakallahu khairan again.

May Allah guide us all. Ameen.

The deen is being mocked all over this show lota. Let’s all just make dua that it does NOT end up on American TV.

  18. Fauzia Says:

I think many of us don’t like it because the show has been showing “real everyday” north american muslims and not “the perfet” muslims. Have we ever thought about the everyday situations when the “real everyday not so perfect” muslims interact with non-muslims in our society and say or do things which puts Islam and Muslims in a bad light. I will give you two examples: one woman that I met at one of the public event about “women in Islam” at the local library, told me that one of his coworkers refused to shake hands with women because “women are considered impure” in Islam. Now I am not sure what this person was trying to convey; it could be a language barrier as well; but this “everyday not so perfect” muslim did not leave a very good impression of Islam and non-muslims on his coworkers. The woman was relieved to know that the reason behind opposite sexes not shaking hands with each other. The other example is from my own family. When I introduced my sister and her husband to my coworkers, my brother-in-law shook hands with all regardless of their gender in a very professional manner whereas my sister just stood quitely when the first male offered the handshake. Can we all think about what messages these “real not-so-perfect” muslims convey about Islam Muslims to non-muslims.
    1. It is ok for a man to shake hands with woman but not for woman.
    2. Muslim women are not confident enough to speak their minds (my sister didn’t explain why she’d not shake hands)
    3. 2+2=4; Islam oppress women.

I can give you hundreds of real examples about these daily interactions between muslims and non-muslims.

Here is another scenario for you:
Many Muslim men marry (according to Shariah) a second (or even third, fourth) woman but do not register these marriages. These second, third and fouth wives will take welfare as single mothers. Tell the non-muslims workers who deal with these women that Muslims don’t have sexual relationships outside marriage. As someone who works in this system, it bothers me so much when I see a Hijab wearing Muslim woman with many small children (including new borns) pretending to be a single mother.

Now, if tomorrow, “Little Mosque” decides to have a show on these “single Moms” we will all be up in arms against CBC for showing islam and Muslims in a wrong way.

Wake up people, Muslims are also human beings. The ideal perfect Muslims are very hard to find these days.

  19. Steven Says:

I love this Show. It is very light hearted and will make non Muslims see people are people. I liked the show”Book of Daniel” on NBC as well kind of a more serious but a Different look at Christians but it was pulled.
I think the emphsis is on People are more alike than different and we all have a part to play. I am in the USA and as well as enlightened people we do have some idiots.
This Show should be on the Air here!

  20. NJ Says:

This show does not meet with the muslims life at all.

  21. Habayeb Says:

I SO agree with fauzia, althou YES i did find some of the scenes lame…like Fatemah lieing about a verse existing in the Quran n others too…but ya know some muslims DO such kind of stuff just to make their point! This show does have its good n bad points..i woudnt completely shun it. I like to watch it thts all.
